Rare Laparoscopic Surgery @ Chennai

Dr Chandralekha, the renowned Laparoscopic surgeon and Infertility Specialist needs no introduction. With over a decade of experience in this field she has created a niche for herself in treatment of women in general and Infertility in particular. The hospitals at Coimbatore and Palani speak volumes of her credentials and the Adayar centre that had been opened nearly a year ago is rapidly picking up. It would not be out of place to mention that this centre is being regarded as the last resort for childless couples.

‘In my tenure as a laparoscopic surgeon I had treated nearly 10000 couples out of which more than 3000 couples have been successful due to artificial fertilization and 6000 due to natural fertilization. The success rate of my patients is nearly 70%. I have done nearly 10,000 Gynaecological Surgeries. Recently I came across an interesting case that I would like to share with you. This was a challenging case and my diagnosis and line of treatment relieved the patient from a state of agony and anguish that she had suffered for several years’ says Dr Chandralekha of Iswarya Women Care and Fertility Centre.

‘Mrs Rukmani, aged 31, w/o Mr Selvaraj, Chennai, came to me for treatment with a history of pain in the abdomen due to menses for the past ten years. She had consulted many doctors and took several medicines and treatment but the pain did not subside. Finally she came to our Iswarya Women Care and Fertility Centre. I diagnosed and requested her to take an ultrasound of the abdomen. The ultrasound scan showed that she had a double uterus. The right uterus did not communicate with the uterus. In particular there was no external communication at all.  I advised her to go in for a laparoscopic surgery.  I found that the right uterus had a blood clot. This clot lead to abdominal pain and prevented the external communication. So I decided to remove the right uterus. A pinhole surgery was performed and the uterus was removed. The pain and agony subsided and in addition she had bright chances of a successful pregnancy’ adds Dr Chandralekha.

‘The instance of double uterus is 1 in 50000 and generally both communicate externally. This case of double uterus and one not communicating externally is a very rare case. I took up the case as a challenge and the surgery was successful not only in relieving the patient from pain and mental agony but also increasing the chances of conception as well’ concludes Dr Chandralekha.
